A Rescue Foretold

Before our hearts could know to ask for help
While we were still… consuming fruit
Our vomit of stone-heart’s desire – “You will be as gods!”
One bite showed the sharpest stain, sticking and stinking, you instant liar!
Now only fire burns real souls alive till they be empty and false
and dead again and again.
You below…
didn’t say the fruit was death, ongoing death.
Yet it is… always. You didn’t say…

But He… He asked…
Where are you? He asked.
It started then. Rescue! Why would he ask in Genesis 3:9?
Why? He knew where we were. Yes, He knew what He would find.
He could smell it and see it in our hiding.
Our fig leaf display of newly stolen vanity and shame
Our blood running dark with strange, spiritual pain.
He could smell it and feel it in our blame

The woman you gave me. The serpent who lied.

He could smell it and see it in everything we tried… to hide…
He always can! We never can!
He always! We never!

Yet He asks… not us…
He asks… Where are you?

So began a Creator’s rescue so many centuries before it happened in time.
Before our hearts could know to ask for help

Where are you?

Exodus 3 (7-8) “I have surely seen the affliction of my people… and have heard their cry… I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them…”

Where are you?

2 Samuel 7 (12-13) “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Where are you?

Isaiah 9 (2-6) The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. / For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Where are you?

Micah 5 (2) But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

Where are you?
And we answered!

Psalm 118 (22-25) The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Save us, we pray, O LORD!

A Rescue foretold… / A Promise assured…
Where are you? Then through Your Son… to die… You answered…
Wherever you are… I will be.
Past when every clock stops… still be with you
You answered…
And brought us home to where you are.
Before our hearts could know to ask for help.

(This was the first of two “Spoken Word” pieces I presented last night at the Goodwill Christmas Concert. Some people asked for it. It was a great event, really one of the best I’ve ever been to at our church. Thanks!)
